Wait 2-3 business days, then show up.
Following up the same day reads as impatient; waiting two weeks means the context is gone. For most business email, 2-3 business days after the original is the sweet spot for a first follow-up, stretching the gap a little wider with each touch after that. Invoices and time-sensitive requests can go sooner - a real deadline is always a legitimate reason to write.
Reply in the same thread.
A follow-up email in a fresh thread throws away your best asset: the context of the original. Reply on the existing thread so the whole history is one scroll away, and keep the "Re:" subject line so the reader instantly knows which conversation this is. Only start a new thread when you are genuinely changing the subject.
Add something new every time.
"Just bumping this" works exactly once - the short bump template above is that once. Every other follow-up should carry something the last email didn't have: a resource, a relevant example, a new angle on the problem, a real deadline. If you have nothing new to say, that's a signal to wait, not to send.
Make it shorter than the original.
The first email carried the full pitch; the follow-up doesn't need to repeat it - it's sitting right below in the same thread. Three or four sentences is plenty. The longer a follow-up gets, the more it reads like pressure, and the easier it becomes to put off answering.
End with a ten-second ask.
"Let me know your thoughts" is homework. "Does Thursday work?" is a ten-second reply. The single biggest lever in any follow-up email is shrinking the ask until it can be answered from a phone, in one line, without opening a calendar or a document. Yes/no questions and either/or options outperform open questions.
Know when to stop.
Three to four follow-ups spread over a few weeks is a reasonable ceiling for most business contexts - beyond that you're training the reader to ignore you. Send a breakup email that closes the loop politely and leaves the thread open. It reads as professional, and it's often the one that finally gets a reply.

Avoid "Following up" and "Checking in" as the whole subject; they say nothing about what the email needs.
Should a follow-up email be a new email or a reply?
A reply, almost always. Replying keeps the original message one scroll away, so the reader doesn't have to reconstruct the context, and threading means your follow-up inherits whatever attention the original earned. Start a new thread only when the subject has genuinely changed or the old thread is months dead.
